While the match at Harare Sports Club may have come to an end, talk of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's match-winning performance in the Under-19 World Cup Final against England continues, as he hit an explosive 175 off 80 balls, including his impressive 15 sixes, in his match-winning performance.

The reason for this question from the 14-year-old from Bihar was why, after performing against the best young England players and scoring centuries in IPL, he was not included in the Indian senior team. But the reason for his exclusion lies in a rule framed by the International Cricket Council for age-groups.

Why Vaibhav Can't Play for India Now?

The only thing that has stood in the way of Vaibhav Suryavanshi's senior India debut so far is the ICC minimum age rule. The rule, introduced in 2020 with a view to safeguarding young players' physical and mental welfare, prohibits cricketers from international cricket unless they have attained a minimum age of 15 years.

Vaibhav was born on March 27, 2011, which means that even at the time of his historic Under-19 World Cup triumph in February 2026, he was still only 14. As a result, no matter how many rapid centuries he scores for Bihar or how many IPL bowlers he dominates for Rajasthan Royals, the national selectors cannot pick him for the senior team until March 27, 2026.

Interestingly, though he is too young for selection into the senior team, his cricketing journey with India’s Under-19 team is over as well. The BCCI has a very strict ‘one tournament’ rule for the Under-19 World Cup.

Since Vaibhav was awarded the Player of the Tournament in the 2026 event, he will not be able to play in the 2028 or 2030 Under-19 World Cup, even though he will still be below the age of 19 for those tournaments.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi: A Young Sensation

Records broken by him in the last year tell the story of why this young opening batsman has all the reasons to be so excited:

  • Record in U19 World Cup Final: Amassed an astonishing 175 off 80 balls against England, the highest individual score in a U19 World Cup final.
  • Most Sixes in a U19 World Cup: 30 sixes in the 2026 tournament, going past Dewald Brevis's previous record.
  • Youngest ever List-A centurion: The youngest player to score a List A hundred at 14 years and 272 days.
  • Fastest 150 Ever: Broke AB de Villiers' world record by reaching 150 in just 59 balls during the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
  • Youngest IPL Centurion: At 14 years and 32 days, created history to become the youngest IPL centurion with a 35-ball hundred for Rajasthan Royals.
  • India A First: First player to score a T20 century for India A, hit a 32-ball hundred against the UAE.
  • Fastest Youth ODI Century: I shattered the previous record by scoring my century in just 52 balls, playing against England U19.
  • Youth Test Milestone: Recorded the quickest Youth Test century by an Indian (58 balls), second-quickest overall.
  • Domestic T20 Record: Achieved the record of being a young centurion as he scored an unbeaten century of 108 runs.
  • Six-Hitting Landmark: Became the first batter ever to hit 100 career sixes in Youth ODIs.

For now, it remains within the confines of domestic and franchise cricket as the ‘Suryavanshi Storm’. Perhaps, however, it is not too long before he features. With a packed schedule of games lined up in India later in 2026, his day may arrive sooner than later as he turns 15.
