Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Shane Watson has hit the headlines as more details have emerged about his exit from PSL franchise Quetta Gladiators.
The Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach of IPL 2026 previously served as head coach of Quetta Gladiators and joined the franchise in 2024 but stepped away after one season with a move that was friendly on the surface as Watson cited other commitments for taking a break from the coaching position.
However, it has since emerged from the owner of the Quetta Gladiators Nadeem Omar that there was a disagreement between the management and Watson when he was at the club.
While on a YouTube show with Fawad Alam Omar revealed that a disagreement occurred after Sherfane Rutherford momentarily left the Quetta squad due to personal reasons before two days later deciding to return to the club.
Omar stated:
"Rutherford had gone home for some personal reason and came back after two days. Watson raised issues over Rutherford and questioned if there was any guarantee he would play for the team now that he had left,"
The franchise owner also mentioned that Watson took the situation as a disciplinary issue and refused to include Rutherford in the playing XI despite the team requiring batting strength going into the playoffs.
Omar further added:
"Although we had already qualified for the playoffs, Watson did not select Rutherford in the team when he was called up, claiming he has to treat it as a disciplinary issue Watson wanted to build very strict team culture but I feel that such an approach would not work for our team environment, thus, we did not select him for the upcoming season."
The owner of Quetta Gladiators added that Watson was hoping to create a rigid team structure at the dressing room. However Omar felt that the kind of environment will not suit the team's culture.
Eventually the differences were so great that Watson stepped away from the PSL team before the 2025 season. Shortly after parting ways with the Quetta Gladiators the former Australian all-rounder joined the Indian Premier League and linked up with Kolkata Knight Riders as an assistant coach for IPL 2026.
Playing-wise Watson enjoyed a very successful career in the T20 circuit and played 145 IPL matches in his career where he scored 3874 runs and took 92 wickets while he also played for the Quetta Gladiators in the PSL from 2015-21 and scored 677 runs for the franchise.
Currently Watson is fully focused on leading the Kolkata Knight Riders team to playoff qualification in IPL 2026 after a poor start to the campaign.
