Indian coach Gautam Gambhir recently commented on MS Dhoni in an interesting way, saying that he wished one day Dhoni would be India's head coach.
This comment was made following India's victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad. Dhoni, not an avid social media user, posted a congratulatory message on the Indian team and support staff following their victory.
Also on his Instagram post, Dhoni teased Gambhir about his smile. The former Indian captain wrote that the coach's intense look along with a smile was a "killer combo".
The caption of MS Dhoni's post read:
“History gets created at Ahmedabad, big congratulations to the team and support staff and to all the fans of Indian Cricket Team worldwide. Such a pleasure to see all of you play.”
Dhoni then added an additional line in a message to the Indian coach:
"Coach Sahab smile looks great on you, intensity with smile is a killer combo, very well done. Enjoy guys."
Gambhir later responded to Dhoni's post with:
"And what a reason to smile, great seeing you!"
A week after the World Cup win in Ahmedabad, Gambhir, speaking at the RevSports Trailblazers Conclave, acknowledged Dhoni's message and his presence at the final match.
The head coach for India also joked that he wished one day he could get into Dhoni's coaching position to say the same thing.
Gambhir said:
"Good on him [Dhoni] to come and watch the World Cup final. Good on him to ask me to smile, and I wish one day he could be in my position, and I can write the same thing, and hopefully, he can smile from the dugout."
While Gambhir will be taking a 2-month break, MS Dhoni will be participating in the upcoming Indian Premier League. At the age of 44, he will be playing for the Chennai Super Kings once again in IPL 2026.
Gambhir and Dhoni shared a number of huge moments while playing on the Indian team. During the first ever 2007 ICC World Twenty20 final between India and Pakistan, Gambhir played a vital role in the Indian team's victory, with 75 runs, by five runs.
The duo once again proved crucial in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup final, in which Gambhir hit 97 runs and Dhoni finished on 91 without being dismissed, while smashing the winning six over the boundary ropes.
Both victories were won by the Indian team on the biggest stages of the sport and remain to be some of the most iconic memories in the history of Indian cricket.
