India’s preparations for the crucial second Test against South Africa have taken a worrying turn, with skipper Shubman Gill’s participation looking increasingly uncertain. Gill sustained a neck injury during the opening Test in Kolkata, where India unexpectedly failed to chase a modest target of 124 runs.

His discomfort was so severe that he was unable to come out to bat in the second innings. Although Gill is scheduled to travel with the team to Guwahati, reports suggest that the stiffness in the nape of his neck has not improved enough to guarantee his involvement in the upcoming match.

If he continues to struggle with mobility, he is likely to skip the Test and instead undergo further assessment at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Nitish Kumar Reddy Added as Cover for the Injured Skipper

With Gill’s participation hanging in the balance, the selectors have called in Nitish Kumar Reddy as a precautionary replacement. The dynamic Andhra all-rounder, who has already impressed with a Test century to his name, was part of the ongoing India A series against South Africa A in Rajkot.

However, following Gill’s injury update, Reddy was swiftly withdrawn from the squad and rushed to Kolkata, where he arrived on Monday evening. Notably, he also skipped the net session that day, indicating his immediate shift toward joining the senior team setup.

Sources have revealed that logistically it would have been nearly impossible for Reddy to play the India A fixture on Wednesday night and still make it in time for the first training session in Guwahati the next day. To avoid any compromise in preparation, the team management prioritized his availability for the Test squad.

Selection Implications for India’s Must-Win Test

With India trailing in the series and needing a victory to stay alive, team composition has become a significant focus. Reddy, being a right-handed batter and someone who offers value with both bat and ball, could be a viable candidate for a spot in the playing XI if Gill is unable to recover in time. His inclusion provides India with a flexible middle-order option and an additional seam-bowling angle.

Meanwhile, the team remains hopeful that Gill’s condition may improve before the match begins on November 22 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, although early signs suggest the chances are slim. His potential absence not only affects leadership but also leaves a key spot in the top order uncertain at a critical juncture in the series.
