There seems to be a change in plans regarding the venue for the IPL auction, which now appears set to take place overseas. While the franchises haven’t received an official confirmation yet, they have been informally hinted about the possible location. The Gulf region has emerged as the most likely destination, with Abu Dhabi being the frontrunner, though other Middle Eastern venues such as Oman and Qatar are also under consideration.
This marks a shift from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) earlier intention to conduct the auction in India. However, finding a suitable venue in the country has reportedly become difficult due to the clash with the festive and wedding season during the proposed window. As per earlier reports, the auction is expected to be held around mid-December, most likely in the latter half of the month.
The BCCI is expected to confirm the official date and venue by November 15, which is also the deadline for teams to submit their list of retained and released players ahead of IPL 2025. With the retention deadline just a couple of weeks away, discussions among IPL franchises are intensifying, particularly surrounding player retentions, releases, and potential trades.
The biggest buzz, as first reported by Cricbuzz, revolves around a possible Sanju Samson trade, a move that has quickly become the main talking point in franchise circles. Despite his recent struggles to make an impact in international cricket, including during the Asia Cup and the ongoing series against Australia, Samson continues to be highly rated by several franchises for his proven track record in the IPL.
A decision regarding his trade could be finalised soon, as Rajasthan Royals’ lead owner, Manoj Badale, is set to arrive in Mumbai from the UK on Tuesday. His visit is expected to shape key retention calls, including those of Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga — two spinners who were previously considered for release during Rahul Dravid’s coaching tenure.
With Kumar Sangakkara now back in charge, it remains to be seen if there will be a rethink on the Sri Lankan duo. Meanwhile, there has also been speculation surrounding Mohammed Shami’s future, but Sunrisers Hyderabad are reportedly unwilling to part ways with the senior pacer, despite receiving multiple trade offers for him.
In addition, multiple player releases are expected from Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and potentially Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming days.
