Qualifier 2 is one of the most important matches in the IPL playoffs. This encounter determines who makes it to the finals of the competition as the second finalist and provides the two contesting teams with their last chance to be part of the fight for the IPL title.
The Indian Premier League has had its current format of playoffs since 2011, prior to which, the competition followed a simple semi-final knockout format. The new design provides an extra advantage for teams finishing in the top two after the league stage.
Qualifier 2 pits the loser of Qualifier 1 against the winner of the Eliminator. The losing side from Qualifier 1, having suffered only one loss so far in the playoffs, gets a second chance, while the winner of the Eliminator comes into the contest after winning a knockout match.
The winner of Qualifier 2 proceeds to the final of the Indian Premier League and the losing side exits the tournament.
Qualifier 2 is widely considered the hardest game to win out of all the playoff matches as the teams playing under each set of conditions have their unique pressure factors. One side, looking to get back into the finals after having missed the chance in the first qualifier, while the other, on a high of having won the Eliminator.
It has delivered numerous iconic moments in the history of the IPL over the years. Mumbai Indians in 2013 and 2017, Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, have all gone on to win the title after a Qualifier 2 victory.
However, history suggests most teams that win Qualifier 2 ultimately fail to win the IPL title. From the fifteen editions between 2011 and 2025, only three Qualifier 2 winners went on to claim the IPL crown.
