For quite some time, Tilak Varma was hailed as one of India’s finest top-order batters, but there was a catch he often struggled when pushed down the batting order. This was true for a while, especially considering he scored 649 runs batting at number 3 and 490 runs at number 4 in T20Is. However, the T20 World Cup 2026 turned that narrative on its head.
After a series of disappointing performances despite getting off to solid starts at number 3 during the tournament, Tilak found himself moved down the order in the latter half. Surprisingly, this shift turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him, allowing him to showcase a different side of his game that the Indian team truly appreciated, bringing much-needed stability.
In the T20 World Cup 2026, Tilak batted at number 3 in 5 out of India’s 9 matches, with scores of 25, 25, 25, 31, and 1. These numbers reflected the pressure he faced, as he struggled to convert those promising starts into substantial innings. Once he was asked to bat at 5 or lower for the remaining matches, the results were nothing short of impressive.
In the next four games, he scored 44* off 16 balls while batting at 6 against ZIM, 27 off 15 against WI at 5, 21 off 7 against ENG at 7, and 8* off 6 at 6 against NZ in the T20 World Cup 2026 final. This shift proved that not only did Varma add stability to the Indian middle order, but he also found the freedom to express himself, something he has openly acknowledged.
“I always say that whatever team needs, I am up for it. So I have done the same role (switching up between stabiliser and a hitter in the middle-order) for the last four years in IPL for the Mumbai Indians, and also I have done in a few games for the Indian team. So I am up for it. Whatever the team needs, I am up. And according to the situation, I can adjust. But as I said before, I was just waiting for one innings. So I am really grateful to God for that. I am pretty confident now that, going forward, I can win the games for the team,” Tilak Varma had said after the game against Zimbabwe.
In 2025, which turned out to be Tilak’s most successful year in T20Is, he played 20 matches and accumulated 567 runs. During that time, he batted at numbers 3 and 4 on 13 occasions, and once each at 5, 6, and 7. His best performances came when he batted higher up the order. However, it seems India may have discovered a gem in Tilak Varma the finisher after the T20 World Cup. He has shown that he’s not just another top-order batter; he’s more than capable of stepping into the finisher role with ease.
