In a practice match on Saturday, Ishan Kishan, the stand-in captain for Sunrisers Hyderabad, was given a fiery send-off by teammate Zeeshan Ansari. The incident took place during the eighth over of the second innings when Ansari, leg spinner, got the better of Kishan. The batter had started aggressively, hitting two sixes and two fours off the first four balls, but was eventually trapped by a well-executed delivery, resulting in an easy catch at deep square leg.

Ansari then animatedly gestured Kishan to return to the pavilion, while the former was seen smiling.

Sunrisers Hyderabad named Ishan Kishan as stand-in skipper for the initial phase of IPL 2026, with Abhishek Sharma taking on the role of vice-captain, while Pat Cummins recovers from a lower-back stress injury. Cummins, who was sidelined for a large part of the recent Ashes tour Down Under and the T20 World Cup, is set to miss a few fixtures, though the franchise has not specified the duration.

“Pat Cummins will be out for a few games while he recovers from injury. In the meantime, Ishan Kishan will take over as captain, and Abhishek Sharma will serve as vice-captain,” the franchise said.

Kishan earned the temporary captaincy due to his strong performances in recent tournaments. The left-handed batter was pivotal in India’s T20 World Cup triumph, scoring 317 runs in nine matches at an average of 80.25 with a strike rate of 199.37, including three half-centuries, finishing as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament. His consistent form also lifted him to the No. 2 spot in the ICC T20I batting rankings, just behind Abhishek Sharma.

In domestic cricket, Kishan also led Jharkhand to their first-ever Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title earlier this season, further demonstrating his leadership abilities.
