Jammu and Kashmir’s Cricket Trailblazer Parvez Rasool Retires

Parvez Rasool, the first-ever cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to represent India, has officially announced his retirement from all formats of the game. His rise from the picturesque valleys of Kashmir to the international stage remains a story of resilience and passion.

Rasool made his debut for the Indian team in 2014 during an ODI series against Bangladesh. In that match, he showcased his bowling skill by completing his full quota of ten overs and dismissing key players such as Mushfiqur Rahim and Anamul Haque.

His second and final appearance for India came in a T20I against England in 2017, where he bowled economically and picked up a wicket. Despite his brief international career, Rasool’s contribution to Indian cricket was monumental — symbolizing opportunity and hope for cricketers from Jammu and Kashmir.

A Rewarding Domestic and IPL Career

Beyond his short international stint, Rasool had a prolific domestic career that spanned over a decade. In first-class cricket, he accumulated 5,648 runs and claimed 352 wickets, proving himself as one of the most consistent all-rounders on the Indian domestic circuit. His stellar performance during the 2012–13 Ranji Trophy season, where he scored 594 runs and took 33 wickets, made him a standout player. Rasool’s excellence was recognized with the prestigious Lala Amarnath Award for the best all-rounder in the Ranji Trophy twice — in 2013–14 and again in 2017–18.

Rasool also created history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the first player from Jammu and Kashmir to feature in the tournament. Making his IPL debut in 2013 with Pune Warriors India, he went on to represent Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Although opportunities were limited — playing just 11 matches and taking four wickets — his mere presence in the league was an inspiration for young cricketers from his region. He even gained experience playing in domestic leagues in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, further enriching his cricketing journey.

Announcing his retirement, Rasool shared an emotional message expressing deep gratitude for the support he received throughout his career. “It’s been an incredible journey filled with dreams, hard work, joy, and countless memories that I will cherish forever,” he said. “From local grounds to representing my country, Allah has given me everything I ever wished for.” His words reflected not just pride, but also humility and thankfulness toward his family, coaches, teammates, and fans.
