Brisbane Heat confirmed that Indian batting star Jemimah Rodrigues will not rejoin the team for the remainder of the WBBL season, honouring her request to remain in India after Smriti Mandhana’s wedding was postponed due to a medical emergency in the family.

Rodrigues had travelled home nearly ten days earlier, right after the Heat’s match against Hobart Hurricanes, expecting to attend the celebrations. However, the sudden illness of Mandhana’s father led to the cancellation of the event. Given the situation, Jemimah decided it was more important to stay close to the family during this sensitive period. The franchise made it clear that they completely supported her decision.

Heat Express Support and Understanding

Terry Svenson, CEO of Brisbane Heat, acknowledged that fans and the team were looking forward to Rodrigues’ comeback, especially since she was their top international draft pick this season and was in her second stint with the club. Even so, Svenson stressed that her wellbeing was the priority. He explained that the circumstances were exceptional, and the club stood firmly behind her choice.

Svenson noted, “Jemi told us she was disappointed not to be coming back and has passed on her appreciation to the club and the Heat fans for being so understanding of the circumstances.”

He also added that she has maintained regular communication with her teammates despite not being physically present. According to him, she has been wishing the squad well for the games ahead and showing full support from afar.

Heat Look Ahead Amid Tough Start

The Heat have had a difficult beginning to their campaign, still searching for their first victory of the season. Their most recent disappointment came in a thrilling contest where they lost on the final ball to the Adelaide Strikers. The absence of Rodrigues, a reliable middle-order presence and a charismatic influence in the dugout, adds to the team’s challenges. Yet, the management remains focused on turning their campaign around.

As they prepare for their next clash against the Sydney Sixers at Adelaide Oval, the squad is expected to regroup and push for a breakthrough win. Though Rodrigues’ absence will be felt, the team has expressed confidence in their ability to adapt and perform.

Her decision, though tough, reflects her commitment to standing by Mandhana’s family during an emotionally demanding time — a gesture the cricketing community has widely appreciated.
