Australian wicket-keeper batter Josh Inglis — who had a significant role in Punjab Kings’ run in the 2025 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) — has officially informed the BCCI that for the 2026 season he will be available for only about 25 percent of the matches.  That translates to a maximum of four games for him next year.

Initially there were expectations that Punjab Kings would retain him; however, his limited availability prompted the franchise to release him ahead of the retention deadline. The reason behind this is reportedly a clash with his personal commitments — notably his wedding — which overlaps with much of the 2026 IPL schedule.

2025 Performance: High Impact Despite Limited Action

Despite playing only 11 matches for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 and scoring a modest total of 278 runs, Inglis made his presence felt by delivering at a brisk strike rate — 162.57 — and playing a couple of pivotal innings when it mattered most. In the final league match, he struck a quick 73 off 42 balls against Mumbai Indians, helping his side secure a top-two finish in the points table.

Moreover, in Qualifier 2 — again facing Mumbai — Inglis hammered a rapid over against star bowler Jasprit Bumrah (20 runs in one over), playing a crucial role in helping Punjab Kings reach the tournament final.  These key contributions, though few in number, underscored his value as a dangerous middle-order hitter capable of accelerating the innings when needed.

What This Means for IPL 2026

Inglis’s limited availability raises serious questions for franchises eyeing him in the upcoming 2026 mini-auction: given that he will miss roughly three-quarters of the tournament, investing in him — especially at his base price — may not fit team balance or strategy.  Teams typically prefer players who can contribute consistently across the season, rather than sporadically.

Moreover, with many high-profile players vying for spots in a tight auction pool, franchises may be more inclined to back full-season players rather than a specialist who would only be available for a handful of matches. Nevertheless, Inglis remains a proven T20 finisher with the ability to change a game in just a few overs — and for a team needing a short-term power-hitter (for example, during a scheduling overlap or injury cover), he could still represent a valuable tactical pick.
