Lucknow Super Giants start their Indian Premier League season with a home match against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday at their Lucknow stadium. However, fans are buzzing with excitement to spot New Zealand legend Kane Williamson inside the LSG dressing room for IPL 2026.

Williamson who played for Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2015 to 2023 would skip the IPL 2026 auction to start a new position with Super Giants which initiated discussions about his international retirement.

Kane Williamson announced his retirement from T20 internationals in November 2025. He stepped away from the shortest format just months before the T20 World Cup scheduled in India and Sri Lanka in February.

He became New Zealand's second-most successful T20I batsman after scoring 2575 runs with a batting average of 33.44 which included 18 half-centuries and his highest score of 95. The head coach directed the squad in 75 T20I games which included their 2016 and 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final appearances and their 2021 T20 World Cup final match.

He continues to play international cricket for New Zealand because he has not yet announced his retirement from international cricket. The 35-year-old plays professional cricket for teams around the globe but he will stay off the field during this IPL season.

The main question arises from Kane Williamson's presence in the LSG dugout because he does not participate in IPL 2026 games. William Morrison did not participate in the IPL auction which took place in Abu Dhabi during December. He remained unsold at the IPL 2025 auction after his last appearance in the league with the Gujarat Titans during the 2024 season.

The former New Zealand captain has now taken up his first support staff role as Lucknow Super Giants’ Mentor and Strategic Advisor. He also played for LSG’s sister franchise, Durban Super Giants, during the SA20 2025-26 season.

The LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka introduced the Kiwi legend to his team during October 2026 because he valued the player's leadership skills and game awareness and ability to motivate teammates. Williamson showed his enthusiasm for joining LSG because he wanted to work with their talented players and their strong coaching staff who would help him succeed in the IPL.

The upcoming LSG match will determine whether Kane Williamson's new position as team member will successfully alter the team's current performance situations.
