Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians will go into the IPL 2026 mini-auction with a clear task ahead of them. They have only INR 2.75 crore remaining in their purse, along with five slots to fill, including one overseas slot.
The contingent already has 20 players secured, which goes to show their plan for sticking to a strong and stable core built around Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rohit Sharma. But that small purse means MI must work smartly and focus on such players who add value without costing much.
Mumbai’s core has looked settled since the 2025 mega auction. Senior names like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Bumrah, SKY and Tilak Varma give the team leadership and quality. The franchise has also added smart options like Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult (in his second MI stint), and overseas picks Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton, Mitchell Santner and Corbin Bosch.
The problem, however, is the price tag of these big names. MI paid full value to secure match-winners, and as a result, they now have limited money left for the mini-auction. Consequently, this leaves the team with no room for high-profile buys. Every player purchased on auction day must be either a low-cost Indian option or a calculated overseas pick available within their tight budget.
Looking at the squad balance, MI need three things from this mini-auction.
The most realistic and sensible pick is Kerala spinner Vignesh Puthur. He had already impressed in his earlier stint for MI, who are considering picking him again.
He fits into this perfectly because:
If the MI buy only one spinner, Puthur is their most logical option given their budget.
J&K pacer Auqib Nabi is just the sort of Indian fast bowler MI normally backs: not yet a big name, but a proven domestic performer with pace and control.
Nabi gives MI:
He will be a very strong option if MI find Jonny Bairstow available near his base price or around INR 1.5 crore. On his day, Bairstow can change the game in the first six overs. He made an impact in a couple of games he played for MI in the 2025 season and hence, the franchise will target him for the coming season as well.
If they don't get Bairstow, MI will target a more affordable wicket-keeper. But, their primary aim will be to rope in someone who is aware of the team management and environment and Bairstow fits well in this area.
