Australian captain Mitchell Marsh has addressed the controversy surrounding a promotional video that mocked India’s handshake snub during the Asia Cup 2025. The video, posted by Kayo Sports, featured Marsh and several Australian players humorously suggesting alternative greetings for the Indian team.
The clip was widely criticised online for allegedly making fun of India’s decision to avoid handshakes with Pakistan players during the tournament. In the Asia Cup, Indian cricketers refrained from shaking hands with their Pakistani counterparts and even declined to receive the winner’s trophy from PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi after their five-wicket victory in the final.
When questioned about the promo ahead of the first ODI between India and Australia in Perth, Marsh appeared unaware of the situation. Dismissing the matter lightly, he said, “I actually haven’t seen the ad, I don’t know if it’s blowing up. I don’t have much to comment on it.” His calm response suggested a desire to keep the focus on the upcoming series rather than off-field distractions.
Marsh redirected attention toward the much-anticipated series between the two powerhouse teams. The three-match ODI contest is expected to draw huge crowds, with over 1,75,000 tickets already sold. Fans are particularly excited to watch India’s senior stars return to Australian soil. Marsh noted that the rivalry between the two sides always brings out high-quality cricket and a sense of respect between players despite the competitive nature of the contests.
He also underlined that the series is an opportunity for both teams to fine-tune their combinations ahead of major tournaments, while fans can witness world-class cricket in action. The excitement surrounding the matches reflects the immense popularity of both teams and the deep-rooted cricketing ties between India and Australia.
Speaking about Indian legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Marsh showed great admiration for their achievements and the impact they’ve had on the game. “Had the privilege of playing against them quite a lot over the journey. They are obviously legends of the game,” he said. Highlighting Kohli’s dominance in limited-overs cricket, he added, “Virat, especially in this white-ball format, is the greatest chaser ever.”
Marsh also acknowledged the buzz created by their presence in Australia, stating, “I think you can see why the ticket sales are so high and why a lot of people are coming to watch them. And if it is their last time on Australian soil, I hope they enjoy it and I hope people can witness — not too much great cricket from them — but witness two of the greats playing in Australia.”
In doing so, Marsh maintained a perfect balance between sportsmanship and competitive banter, setting the tone for what promises to be an electrifying ODI series.
