Mohammed Siraj, who returned to action after a long break, didn’t take time to settle down. The right-arm seamer, who was the best bowler in the previous series against England, took three wickets of the West Indies in the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Siraj was the highest wicket-taker in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, with 23 scalps in 5 Tests, and he showed the same class against the visiting side in the first red-ball game of the home season.

Roston Chase’s decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired as Siraj got rid of Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who failed to open the account despite facing 11 balls.

John Campbell managed 8 runs before he was sent back by Jasprit Bumrah. Siraj then added two more scalps to his wicket tally, dismissing Alick Athanaze (12) and Brandon King (13). The score was 42 for 4 at one stage, but the two most experienced batters, Chase (22*) and Shai Hope (26), took the total to 90/4 before Kuldeep Yadav undid Hope. The West Indies side was 90/5 at the time of lunch.
