Former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma is poised to return to Chennai Super Kings as the franchise’s bowling coach ahead of the 2027 IPL season.

The 38-year-old will replace Eric Simmons, who previously handled the position as part of Stephen Fleming’s coaching staff. Mohit is expected to be the first appointment made to the support team being assembled by CSK’s new head coach, Zaheer Khan.

CSK chief executive Kasi Viswanathan indicated that Zaheer was still working on the composition of his backroom staff but had identified Mohit as his preferred choice for the bowling-coach position. The former pacer is expected to formally sign his contract with the five-time champions shortly.

The appointment would represent a homecoming for Mohit, who spent four IPL seasons as a CSK player. He appeared in 48 league matches for the franchise and also represented them on 10 occasions across two editions of the now-discontinued Champions League T20.

Mohit played eight T20 Internationals for India during his career. He remained active in the IPL until the 2025 season before announcing his retirement from every form of cricket in December 2025. His recent playing experience, along with his familiarity with the CSK environment, is likely to be valuable as he begins his coaching career.

Batting-Coach Appointment Still Pending

Although the bowling-coach role appears close to being settled, CSK have yet to decide who will oversee their batting department in 2027.

Michael Hussey held the position through the 2026 season and was also reportedly among the candidates considered for the head-coach vacancy. The franchise is understood to be evaluating three or four possible replacements, with Zaheer and the CSK management yet to make their final choice.

The overhaul follows a difficult period for one of the IPL’s most successful teams. Chennai captured their fifth championship in 2023 but subsequently missed the playoffs in three consecutive seasons.

That run of disappointing results led CSK to end their long association with Fleming earlier in 2026. The New Zealander had been a central figure in the franchise’s success, first as a player and then during his lengthy tenure as head coach.

Zaheer has now been entrusted with leading CSK into a new era. Mohit’s expected arrival is the first major step in reshaping the coaching structure as the franchise attempts to return to title contention.
