Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a devastating loss in their first match of the season against Rajasthan Royals because MS Dhoni had to leave the game for a short time during IPL 2026. CSK scored 128 runs under Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy but RR won the match after chasing down the target in 12.1 overs with eight wickets remaining.

The Royals match which resulted in a significant defeat to the Super Kings demonstrated existing weaknesses in their roster which they need to address for their quest to win a sixth championship. A new report about MS Dhoni's injury has been released which will impact CSK's upcoming schedule that includes their match against Punjab Kings on April 3 and their southern derby against RCB on April 5.

The Super Kings batted first but they experienced difficulties during the entire match which resulted in their bowling out because they only reached 127 runs in 19.4 overs. The top scorer for Chennai was Jamie Overton who achieved 43 runs while Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson both finished without scoring runs. The batting group was unable to achieve stable batting partnerships.

RR began their pursuit with unstoppable force because Vaibhav Sooryavanshi produced an outstanding cricket performance. He achieved 52 runs from 17 balls to give the Royals an explosive beginning.

Yashasvi Jaiswal then steadied the innings with an unbeaten 38 while Dhruv Jurel scored 18 runs from 9 balls to keep the batting speed. RR secured an easy victory when Captain Riyan Parag reached 14 runs because they completed the chase, which moved them up to the top position in the standings.

The five-time champions CSK could not compete with Rajasthan Royals during both innings of the match despite Sanju Samson being a part of their major trade. The team required their most successful captain MS Dhoni because his experience and tactical skills played a crucial role in their operations.

The Star Sports broadcast showed a Wednesday match clip which featured MS Dhoni practicing in the nets during the DC versus LSG game. The former India captain displayed good batting form while he hit the ball accurately and executed his shots with confidence despite his injury. His calf injury caused him to miss all matches during the first part of the season before it started.

The franchise announced on March 28 that MS Dhoni is currently healing from a calf injury which will prevent him from playing during the first two weeks of the tournament. The official statements confirmed that he is undergoing rehabilitation while he will need to miss a minimum of four upcoming matches.

The fans started predicting his return to the Chennai Super Kings after they saw him training again. The CSK team requires Dhoni to return from his injury because his presence will increase their chances of winning after they lost to Rajasthan Royals.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming provided a fitness update for Dhoni before their first match which he announced that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter can continue to practice with the team after his calf injury reached a controllable state. The five-time champions attempt to rebuild their team this season after they ended the previous year in last place.
