The body of Ian Willian Langford, a British broadcast engineer, was found on Friday at the Trident Hotel in Mumbai. The 76-year-old was in India to cover Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 matches for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Ian had been staying at the hotel since March 24 and had been present for the Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders match at Wankhede Stadium on March 29, which he then returned to his room number 2715 from late that night.

Following a failure to respond to the staff's attempts to reach him in his room on the subsequent morning, hotel staff used a master key to gain access to Ian's room. "As there was no response from inside the room even at that point of time, the hotel staff opened the door using a master key and found Ian lying on the floor," the hotel confirmed, with the in-house doctor confirming Ian was dead on arrival.

the police reported:

His death has since been recorded as an Accidental Death Report (ADR) at Marine Drive Police Station, and there has been no indication of any foul play. "The police found nothing suspicious in his post mortem. They said there was nothing to suggest any foul play, but since it was an untimely and unexpected death, the case is still considered as a possible unnatural death," . Investigation into the cause of death is continuing.

Ian’s Death Highlights Stress Behind Cricket’s Big Events

Ian's sudden death echoes recent tragedies in the world of cricket, with famous commentator Dean Jones dying during last year's IPL in India in September from heart attack complications exacerbated by a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, and former Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer discovered dead in his hotel room during the ODI World Cup in Jamaica back in 2007.

The sudden passing of Ian is a stark reminder of the stress experienced by those involved with large sporting events "behind the scenes," and he will be remembered for his decades of dedication and experience in the cricket broadcasting arena.
