Team India captain Harmanpreet Kaur emphasized that the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 victory is just the beginning, as the Women in Blue aim to build a lasting legacy following their triumph over South Africa in the final. India clinched the title with a commanding 52-run win at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2.
After suffering three consecutive defeats in the group stage, India bounced back strongly with a crucial win against New Zealand to secure a semi-final berth. In the knockout clash, Harmanpreet and her team stunned defending champions Australia with a record-breaking run chase to reach the final.
In the summit clash, the hosts delivered an all-round performance, posting 298 after being asked to bat first and then putting up a disciplined bowling display to dismiss South Africa, despite Laura Wolvaardt’s valiant effort in the chase.
Before their recent victory, India had made it to the Women’s World Cup final on two occasions but fell short both times, extending their wait for a title. However, under Harmanpreet Kaur’s leadership, the team has ushered in a new era in women’s cricket with their historic achievement, and the captain has promised that this is just the beginning.
“We need to give a lot of credit to out support staff. This team has been there from the last 2 years, we have not made a lot of changes which shows they really invested in us and today because of everyone we are standing here. This is the start, we wanted to break the barrier and now our next plan is to make it a habit.”
“We were waiting for this moment, now the moment has come. Next year also there is a World Cup and then the Champions Trophy, so many big events coming up and we just want to keep improving every day, just want to keep giving our best.” Harmanpreet Kaur said during the post-match presentation.
India had come close to reaching the semi-finals of both the 2022 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup, while they fell short in the semi-finals and final of the 2023 and 2020 T20 World Cups, respectively. With their latest triumph, the Women in Blue have become only the fourth team to lift the prestigious trophy, joining Australia, England, and New Zealand.
