Australia's captain Pat Cummins dismantled South Africa with his 6 for 28 during the WTC final, making him the seventh player from his nation to reach 300 Test wickets.

Cummins joined Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon in a bowling attack that, for the first time in Test history, featured three players with 300 or more wickets. Josh Hazlewood's tally stands at 280.

"It's way more than I could have asked for. For any fast bowler, 300 is a big number. It means you've battled a few injuries and niggles, got through it, and played well in different conditions," Cummins said during an innings break.

Keshav Maharaj was run out on the second day, while Cummins, who had dismissed Wiaan Mulder on the preceding evening, grabbed all five wickets to fall to a bowler. After Temba Bavuma drove to cover in the morning session, Cummins shattered South Africa's comeback. He then played a fantastic stint that read 4.1–4–4 after lunch.

After the pair clattered into each other mid-pitch, a leading edge was gathered off Marco Jansen, David Bedingham found the outside edge, and then Kagiso Rabada was brilliantly caught at deep square leg to bring up the 300th. Kyle Verreynne was removed LBW.

With 300 Test wickets, Cummins currently has the fourth-best strike rate among bowlers, after Waqar Younis, Dale Steyn, and Rabada. He took 79 wickets at 23.03 overall during this WTC cycle.
