PCB to sack Aaqib Javed and Wahab Riaz

Pakistan continue to disappoint in men's and women's cricket. Babar Azam-led team lost all three Tests in England while Fatima Sana's squad failed to win the Women's Asia Cup in Dubai. Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to make changes in the near future. 

The PCB is considering several moves as part of improving the performances of the national team, and there is a possibility of Aaqib Javed losing his place in the national selection committee. On the other hand, Wahab Riaz, who has been serving as head coach and mentor of the women's cricket team, is expected to leave along with other members of the support staff following the Asian Games 2026 in Japan.

"Mohsin Naqvi knows that tough measures are required to end the losing streak and poor performances. These changes are on the cards," an internal source was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Aaqib, who is the chief selector, has been behind several key decisions over the past two years. He played a role in the sacking of the Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul. Seven players were sent back on the recommendation of the former pacer after the second Test at Lord's. He is facing massive flak amid instability in Pakistan cricket due to changes in the leadership and coaching groups.

Mike Hesson is ready to take charge of the Test side, but rebuilding the longest format setup in the country could require a long and consistent effort.

However, he would come on board if he is given time to implement his plans without any outside interference. 

The PCB is talking to interested candidates who are ready to join the women's team head coach position after the Asian Games 2026.

Naqvi will speak to all the stakeholders before the PCB formally announces changes. The pressure on the board has intensified in the last few weeks following the downfall of cricket in Pakistan. The sub-continent team has fallen behind the rivals and is failing to win the ICC tournaments and bilateral assignments.

Naqvi recently attended the presentation ceremony of the Women's Asia Cup, but the winning Team India refused to accept the trophy for him. He left the ground after giving the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka.
