Indian legspinner Rahul Chahar is set to rejoin Surrey County Cricket Club for a short County Championship stint following the conclusion of the 2026 IPL, the club confirmed on Thursday. The 25-year-old, who will represent Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming season, is expected to arrive in London immediately after his IPL commitments.
Surrey stated that Chahar will be available for the final eight matches of the County Championship campaign, beginning with their fixture against Hampshire County Cricket Club at The Oval on June 7. The move effectively places him as a second-half reinforcement, while the club continues with its existing overseas combination earlier in the season.
Chahar’s recall follows a highly productive debut stint last September, where he made an instant impression in English conditions. In his first appearance, he returned match figures of 10 for 118, including 8 for 51 in the second innings, helping Surrey secure a 20-run win over Hampshire.
The result played a role in ensuring Surrey’s second-place finish in the standings. It also appeared to push Hampshire towards relegation before results elsewhere altered the final outcome. The performance, though brief in timeline, was evidently sufficient to convince the club to bring him back for a longer run this season. Chahar said,
"I'm so excited to be coming back to Surrey this season. I really enjoyed my short spell in 2025 and jumped at the opportunity to come back this season when I spoke to [director of cricket] Alec Stewart. Surrey is a successful club and I want to help the team achieve its goals in 2026."

Surrey’s director of cricket Alec Stewart reiterated the reasoning behind the decision, keeping the messaging predictably measured.
"Rahul came in last year and did an excellent job at Hampshire, showing his qualities. We're looking forward to welcoming back to the group and seeing how he can contribute to winning games of cricket for Surrey."
The club’s overseas planning indicates a phased approach. Sean Abbott will serve as the primary overseas option during the first half of the County Championship, having already been confirmed for eight first-class matches along with the T20 Blast.
Chahar’s arrival later in the season ensures continuity without disrupting the existing structure—an arrangement that, in county terms, passes for long-term planning.
