Ravichandran Ashwin is on the verge of making his first appearance in the Big Bash League (BBL), with Sydney Thunder reportedly close to finalizing a contract. If the deal is completed, Ashwin will become the first high-profile Indian player to feature in Australia’s premier T20 tournament.

According to Code Sports, Ravichandran Ashwin is likely to link up with Sydney Thunder once he completes his stint in the UAE’s ILT20. With David Warner and promising youngster Sam Konstas in their squad, the Thunder are expected to benefit from Ashwin’s vast experience.

Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement earlier this year, stepping away from international cricket and all domestic competitions in India, including the IPL.

As per BCCI regulations, Indian cricketers can only take part in foreign leagues once they retire from both international and domestic duties. With more than 700 wickets across formats, Ashwin is one of the greatest off-spinners.

Sydney Thunder’s Struggles and Hopes for Revival

Sydney Thunder had a tough campaign in the 2024–25 BBL, finishing at the bottom of the table with just one victory in ten outings. Veteran opener David Warner led the run charts for the side with 405 runs, while Chris Green topped the bowling list, picking up 12 wickets. The arrival of Ravichandran Ashwin is expected to bring stability and experience, particularly in the spin department.

If the deal is finalised, Ravichandran Ashwin will join Sydney Thunder as one of their marquee international recruits for the new season.
