Jofra Archer picked 20 wickets for England in the 2019 edition of the ODI World Cup and even took 6-62 on an absorbing day of Ashes cricket that year, but the express quick hailing from Barbados has had a debilitating tryst with injuries ever since which have rendered his promising career a start-stop affair.
Archer helped orchestrate victory at The Oval with his six-fer, as England came from behind to secure a rare drawn Ashes series. Although his toil proved to be fruitless in the second innings, his high-octane battle with Australia centurion Matthew Wade, who was made to hear the chin music during a spell in which Archer cranked up the speed gun, made for fascinating viewing as the hosts pursued a breakthrough on the fourth evening.
The then England captain Joe Root admitted he was still learning how best to handle a talent like Archer and cautioned against expecting too much of England’s brand new fast-bowling sensation, after a debut series in which Archer snared 22 wickets from four Tests while showcasing both fearsome pace and admirable control.
