Rohit Sharma made his much-anticipated return to international cricket in the first ODI against Australia at Perth, marking his 500th appearance in international cricket. Despite scoring only eight runs before falling to Josh Hazlewood, this milestone placed him in an elite list of Indian cricketers to have achieved such longevity. He became the fifth Indian to reach the 500-match mark, joining legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Rahul Dravid.
The match also witnessed the return of another Indian great, Virat Kohli, who unfortunately registered a duck, dismissed by the same bowler. Both senior players’ low scores could not overshadow the historic significance of Rohit’s milestone moment.
Rohit’s current tally of 11,168 ODI runs keeps him on the brink of surpassing former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who has 11,221 runs. He now needs just 54 more runs to become India’s third-highest run-scorer in One-Day Internationals. Over his illustrious 273-match ODI career, Rohit has amassed his runs at an impressive average of 48.76 and a strike rate of 92.80.
Known for his effortless stroke play and ability to score big hundreds, the opener has notched up 32 centuries and 58 half-centuries, with his monumental 264 against Sri Lanka still standing as the highest individual ODI score in history. His consistency and dominance in white-ball cricket continue to underline his place among modern greats.
Beyond ODIs, Rohit is on the verge of crossing another elite landmark in world cricket. He needs only a few more centuries’ worth of runs to reach the 20,000-run mark across formats, which would make him just the 14th player in history — and the fourth Indian after Tendulkar, Dravid, and Kohli — to achieve the feat. With 49 international centuries to his credit, Rohit’s next ton will also bring up his 50th international hundred, a record accomplished by only nine players globally.
Among Indians, only Sachin Tendulkar (100) and Virat Kohli (80+) have reached that milestone. Even though his comeback innings was short-lived, Rohit’s growing list of records reflects his enduring excellence and monumental contribution to Indian cricket.
