Rohit Sharma has been removed from ODI captaincy, with Shubman Gill getting the captain’s armband. Rohit has already retired from T20Is and Test cricket and is only active in the fifty-over format. There is no confirmation whether he will play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. He has been selected for three ODIs against Australia, but media reports have claimed that there is a possibility of the veteran announcing retirement after the upcoming assignment.

Former India player Mohammad Kaif said that Rohit is never consistent but plays important knocks for the team.

“Players are saying that Virat Kohli’s performance will be closely monitored, but I think it will apply more to Rohit Sharma, who is not the captain anymore. He has been scoring 20 to 30 a lot, but comes up with a match-winning knock in a big match. He is never consistent,” Kaif said.

“Kohli brings consistency, while Rohit brings match-winning innings. If he fails in Australia, people will say he is out of form. If you look at his career graph, he often fails in the first two or three innings and then comes back to form. In the Champions Trophy, he didn’t score big in the early games but became a Player of the Match in the final,” he added.

Kaif has urged the selectors to give enough chances to Virat and Rohit before the World Cup in 2027.

“You need experienced players in the World Cup. If they have decided that they are close to retirement, it is their choice. But if they are allowed to play in the World Cup, they will play match-winning innings. Don’t judge them based on a few innings,” Kaif concluded.
