The big Indian names that dominated during the recently held T20 World Cup this year have been below par during IPL 2026. The top order Indian batters have been maintaining their form, but the Indian bowlers and all-rounders have been completely off form. The overloaded cricket schedule and lack of rest seem to be the main reasons for this drastic drop in performance.
India’s squad for T20 World Cup had little rest time and immediately had to compete in the Indian Premier League. India had recently played against New Zealand in a five-match T20i series during the month of January before the T20 World Cup began and then, within 18 days of the T20 World Cup coming to a conclusion, IPL 2026 had kick-started. This meant there was virtually no recovery time for the players.
The group of players that is facing the most struggle seem to be the bowlers and the all-rounders, who carry the bulk of the workload on their shoulders, both in terms of training and playing matches.
Key Struggles of Indian Players in IPL 2026:
Bumrah and Hardik, two of India’s biggest match-winners during the T20 World Cup, appear to be far from their best during the ongoing edition of the cash-rich league. Hardik's 11.9 economy rate in the Indian Premier League and the low wicket tally for Bumrah in the matches that they have played so far are clear indications of their lack of rhythm and the physical exertion they've had to go through.
The other Indian players that have not lived up to the expectation include the Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Shivam Dube, who hasn't had the same impact in this IPL as last season and the Delhi Capitals' left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
While some Indian bowlers on World Cup duty could not carry their good form into IPL 2026, a good chunk of Indian batters on World Cup duty, like Sanju Samson, have continued to perform in IPL 2026.
Top performers among them include Sanju Samson who is among the highest run-getters, and Abhishek Sharma who is in contention for the Orange Cap at second position. Ishan Kishan has also managed to score 409 runs and Washington Sundar has managed 246 runs with a strike rate above 150.
While Sanju Samson has continued to be a match-winner and Abhishek Sharma an aggressor as well, the biggest disappointment among the batters has been Suryakumar Yadav. He is the skipper for the Indian T20I team, yet he has only scored 195 runs in 10 games at a strike rate of just 19.50. He has failed to amend his weakness to short deliveries which was also visible earlier.
Here are the stats regarding the number of T20Is played by the Indian players just before IPL 2026:
All the players above apart from few (Axar Patel, Washington Sundar) are also multi format players, and thus their load would be even greater than displayed here.
The concern will be even greater due to the schedule which the Indian team is going to follow post IPL 2026 as well. They are scheduled to play Afghanistan and England, shortly after the IPL and there will not be a time for recovery even then. And it raises one of the big questions for Indian cricket in the near future: are players under-performing or is cricket played at this magnitude having a bearing on individual player performance.
