The countdown to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 is officially on. With the tournament scheduled for June and July across England and Wales, the BCCI just dropped the squad list. We already know Harmanpreet Kaur is taking charge, desperate to finally capture that elusive maiden title, with Smriti Mandhana backing her up as vice-captain.

Familiar faces like Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, and Renuka Thakur are all packing their bags. But in cricket, squad announcements always bring a bit of heartbreak. While the selected group looks incredibly strong, a few notable names are surprisingly missing from the passenger list. Competition for spots has never been hotter, meaning some established stars and fresh faces simply did not make the cut this time around. Let’s grab a coffee and break down the five biggest omissions from the national side that have fans talking.

Top 5 Surprising Omissions from India Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Squad

Harleen Deol

Let's start with Harleen Deol. The 27-year-old batting all-rounder brings serious energy to the field, making her absence pretty surprising. She was actually part of last year's ODI World Cup campaign and featured during the Sri Lanka series.

While she grabbed a single ODI cap against Australia earlier this year, she was noticeably missing from the recent South Africa T20Is. Sitting on 28 WT20I appearances, her lack of recent game time in the shortest format probably cost her a ticket to England.

Amanjot Kaur

Next up is Amanjot Kaur, another batting all-rounder who finds herself on the outside looking in. The 25-year-old saw some decent action earlier this year, taking the field during both the ODI and T20I legs against Australia in February.

However, the selectors looked the other way when picking the squad for the recent South Africa matchups. Despite having a solid foundation of 23 T20I matches under her belt, she simply could not secure her spot in the final World Cup traveling party.

Kashvee Gautam

Kashvee Gautam’s exclusion stings a bit considering she just played last month. The right-arm pacer was handed an opportunity during the recent T20I series against South Africa. Unfortunately, she just could not find her rhythm on the international stage.

Across her three appearances in that series, she only managed to pick up a single wicket and went completely wicketless in the other two clashes. That lack of immediate impact clearly prompted the selectors to look elsewhere for their pace attack.

Anushka Sharma

Similar to Kashvee, Anushka Sharma got her shot during the recent South Africa tour, actually making her T20I debut. She was given three games to prove herself in the middle. She managed to put up scores of 28, 27, and 17.

While those are not terrible numbers for a rookie, they just were not explosive enough to demand a World Cup spot. The management is clearly looking for massive impact innings, and unfortunately, her starts just did not convert into big scores.

Sneh Rana

Leaving out Sneh Rana is arguably the boldest call of the bunch. The spin all-rounder carries plenty of experience with 31 WT20I caps to her name. She was even part of the setup against Australia back in March, making appearances in both the ODI and Test formats.

But the writing was on the wall when she was completely ignored for the South Africa T20I series last month. The selectors clearly wanted to move in a different direction with their spin bowling all-rounders.

Conclusion

The reality of modern franchise cricket is that domestic tournaments are completely changing the national selection landscape. We are constantly seeing how the immense impact uncapped players have on the league puts massive pressure on established international stars.

When young, fearless uncapped talents dominate domestic competitions, they force national selectors to make absolutely ruthless decisions. Missing out on a World Cup is heartbreaking for veterans, but it proves just how much depth Indian cricket is developing behind the scenes. This fierce competition for every single roster spot ultimately ensures the national squad heading to England is as sharp as possible.
