Harold “Dickie” Bird, one of cricket’s most respected umpires, passed away on September 23, 2025, at the age of 92. Known for his accuracy, humility, and charm, Bird officiated in 66 Tests and 69 ODIs between 1973 and 1996. His final Test at Lord’s in 1996 witnessed the debuts of Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly, making it a truly historic match.
Before umpiring, Bird represented Yorkshire in first-class cricket, scoring over 3,300 runs. Honored with an MBE in 1986 and an OBE in 2012, he earned admiration from legends like Sobers, Richards, Lillee, and Botham. Bird was also remembered for his quirky moments, including a mid-match haircut for Sunil Gavaskar and demanding Malcolm Marshall apologize to Balwinder Sandhu during the 1983 World Cup Final.
Cricket has lost more than just an umpire; it has lost a symbol of fairness and joy. RIP Dickie Bird.
