Indian cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar received a standing ovation and roaring applause from fans at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, in London. Tendulkar rang the iconic Pavilion bell to signal the start of play for the third Test between India and England.
The Lord’s Cricket Ground, referred to as the ‘Home of Cricket’ now has another name engraved in its walls, of ‘Master-Blaster’ Sachin Tendulkar. As part of a cherished tradition at the iconic venue, the 52-year-old was given the privilege of ringing the five-minute bell at the Bowlers’ Bar of the Lord’s Pavilion, signaling the start of the first day’s play. Only Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar are the other Indian greats to have rung the bell, before him.
As Tendulkar began ringing the bell at Lord’s, the Indian cricketing legend was met with a joyous roar and a standing ovation from the English crowd. Not just that, but adding to the accolades, he also unveiled his own portrait at the Lord’s Museum, accompanied by former Marylebone Cricket Club president Mark Nicholas. This portrait will be displayed at the museum for a year before being moved to the Pavilion.

Tendulkar’s portrait at Lord’s was interestingly painted by Stuart Pearson Wright, the same man who painted the portraits of the other Indian legends. In fact, he is now the fifth Indian player to have his portrait in the MCC Museum, joining Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Kapil Dev , Bishan Singh Bedi, and Dilip Vengsarkar. Reflecting on this honor, Tendulkar stated how it brings his cricketing journey full circle, from watching his idol, Kapil Dev, lift the 1983 World Cup at the same iconic venue.
However, Tendulkar’s record at Lord’s remains notably underwhelming. In his five Test matches at Lord’s, Sachin Tendulkar managed just 195 runs at a rather poor average of 21.66, with a highest score of only 37. Nevertheless, his overall records in England remain unmatched, having scored over 2,200 runs in 36 matches, including four Test centuries, showcasing his strong performance in the country as a whole.

The 52-year-old also remains the highest run-getter in international cricket to date, having amassed over 34,000 runs and an unprecedented 100 centuries across all formats. In a tribute to his enduring legacy, the India-England series, formerly known as the Pataudi Trophy, was renamed the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, honoring both the Indian batting icon and the English bowling legend, James Anderson .

The focus now shifts towards the ongoing series, which also kickstarts the 2025-27 World Test Championship Cycle. The series is currently tied at 1-1, with England securing the opening victory in Headingley, Leeds, while India leveled the series by winning the second Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Former Indian cricketer and global icon Sachin Tendulkar extensively praised newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill, lauding both his leadership and batting abilities. Tendulkar also lauded Gill’s calm and composed demeanor, noting that he has been well-received by his teammates.
Shubman Gill has been brilliant so far, having scored 585 runs in the first two Tests at an average of 146.25, with two hundreds and a double-hundred. Sachin Tendulkar most recently praised Gill’s decision-making abilities, complemented by his in-form batting display. He also expressed his elation at the way the Indian team rallied to win the Edgbaston Test, despite facing an initial setback in the series:
He’s been good. He’s very calm and composed… And his batting is complementing that as well, because if a captain is in good form, it makes a huge difference in the decision-making…He’s been batting brilliantly. As an opposition, you normally look for the weak areas in the batting and technique, but he has been batting remarkably and has been special.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill and his team have now set their sights on gaining a lead in the five-match Test series, with the third match currently underway at Lord’s. Jasprit Bumrah‘s return to the playing XI will significantly boost the team’s overall performance and morale.
