West Indies fast bowler refuses to play against Pakistan

WI vs PAK 2026: West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has refused to play against Pakistan in the upcoming two-match Test series. While Cricket West Indies said that Joseph made himself unavailable due to personal reasons, head coach Daren Sammy opened up on the issues. "It is a big loss for us. Mr Joseph has declined selection. That's the reality of the situation," Sammy said at a press interaction ahead of the opening game.

"He was selected. I mean, he's now coming back from injury. And for reasons since, he has declined the selection. That is a decision that is beyond my scope. I leave that with the directors to come up with whatever solutions where contracted players get to decline selection," he added. 

In 42 Tests for the West Indies, he has picked up 130 wickets. Despite the absence of one of the top performers, Sammy is backing his bowling unit.

Shamar Joseph, Kemar Roach, and Jayden Seales are the pacers, while the team will also depend on all-rounders Justin Greaves and Keemo Paul. 

Jomel Warrican, Joshua Bishop and captain Roston Chase will handle the spin department. 

"Our bowlers performed well against Australia and New Zealand. We matched both teams as far as bowling was concerned. The batters have worked hard, and you saw their performance in the Test series against Sri Lanka. We have bowlers who can take 20 wickets. This is needed when you want to win Test matches," Sammy mentioned.

"You know about our consistency. The batters can score runs, and some bowlers can chip in with 20 wickets and help us win Test matches," he concluded.

Windies have been impacted by inconsistency in red-ball cricket and the team hasn't made it to the final of the World Test Championship in three cycles. Despite the presence of talented players, West Indies have been found wanting in front of big teams. 

Pakistan have similar problems and are one of the worst-performing nations when it comes to the longest format of the game. They are losing at home, and winning in overseas conditions remains a dream for the sub-continent team. Babar Azam has returned as Test skipper after Shan Masood was sacked by the Pakistan Cricket Board, following poor returns as skipper.
