What Happened to Jack Edwards? Sunrisers Hyderabad Star Out of IPL 2026

The 25-year-old seam-bowling allrounder was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for a hefty INR 3 crore at the last auction, and he was all set to make his IPL debut this season though that will have to be put on hold now. He was the only uncapped overseas player to be signed during the 2025 auction. 

Edwards had a standout season in the BBL 2025-26, claiming 19 wickets and scoring 133 runs across 13 matches for the Sydney Sixers. Just four days after the Sixers fell to the Perth Scorchers in the BBL final, he made his international debut in a T20I against Pakistan in Perth. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a day to remember: he ended up with figures of none for 25 in two overs and just 5 runs from six balls. Since then, he’s played two Sheffield Shield matches for New South Wales, with the latest one wrapping up only on Thursday. 

This is another setback for SRH, who will also be missing their regular captain, Pat Cummins, at the start of the season as he recovers from a lumbar stress issue. In his absence, Ishan Kishan will step up to lead the team.

Edwards' injury adds to the growing list of Australian fast bowlers sidelined. Alongside Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Ellis are also out of the IPL, either partially or completely, due to injuries. 

Sunrisers Hyderabad Face Early Challenge

SRH is set to kick off the season on March 28 in Bengaluru, where they’ll go head-to-head with the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru. 

Sunrisers Hyderabad are facing a challenging start to IPL 2026, with key players missing due to injuries. The loss of Pat Cummins and now Edwards’ setback certainly weakens their bowling lineup. With Ishan Kishan at the helm, SRH will strive to remain competitive. Their opening match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be a crucial test of their squad's depth.
