One serious incident occurred during the Delhi Capitals versus Punjab Kings Indian Premier League match when Lungi Ngidi was heavily injured while attempting a catch. He fell on his back and hit his head and then had to be taken from the ground in an ambulance.

Because he could not participate, the team then required a concussion substitute. Normally, a team looks for like-for-like replacement. In this case, it seemed to be perfect in the form of Dushmantha Chameera as he is a fast bowler, just like Ngidi.

However, they went with Vipraj Nigam and this baffled a lot of people.

Why Chameera Could Not Replace Ngidi as Concussion Sub in DC vs PBKS

The major reason behind this lies in the overseas player rule. In the IPL there is a limitation on the number of overseas players permitted in the starting XI to only four.

If all four overseas spots have been used then the team is unable to bring another overseas player on as a substitute, even with a concussion. This is a rigid rule which does not alter.

Therefore even though Chameera would have been a perfect like-for-like replacement, he was unable to come on as the overseas number would have been over four.

The Lesser-Known Rules of Concussion Substitutes in IPL

Not only matching of skills, but also squad numbers play role in concussion substitutes. If the overseas replacement is not permissible, the team will have to replace it from Indian players available in the squad, in this case there was only one bowler in the squad who was Indian, hence only one option was available.

There are some more important rules which go unnoticed. If the 15-member team provided during the toss does not have the specific type of replacement, like for example the wicket-keeper, a player can be replaced from outside the provided 15-member, but still will be required to be an Indian player even if the wicketkeeper injured is an overseas.

There is one more point here; when rule says 'like-for-like' replacement it is not always the identical skill set, it also includes balancing of skill, availability, squad limitations.

This instance is a very clear picture of how rigid and detailed playing conditions are. Though a direct replacement is readily available, yet the rule limitations prevent them from getting the required opportunity.
