India defeated Sri Lanka by 59 runs in the first match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 on September 30 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. India scored 269/8 in 47 overs and dismissed the rivals for 211 runs in 45.4 overs in a rain-curtailed match.

Deepti Sharma was the star of the show, scoring a fifty and taking three wickets for the Women in Blue.

The Lankans tried hard, but the fall of regular wickets resulted in their defeat, with captain Chamari Athapaththu amassing 43 runs off 47 balls. Nilakshika Silva managed 35 runs off 29 balls, but her effort was not enough.

The 103-run partnership between Amanjot Kaur and Deepti was the turning point of the match. India were 124/6 at one stage, but the two took the score to 227 before Kaur was dismissed. It allowed the Indian team to reach 269.

Sri Lanka’s head reached 82/1 and were in the game, but the dismissal of Athapaththu put them on the back foot, and they couldn’t recover from the loss.

Player of the Match

India all-rounder Deepti was named the Player of the Match for scoring 53 and picking up three wickets.

What This Result Means for the Women’s World Cup 2025

It was the first match, and the outcome wouldn’t impact anyone except India and Sri Lanka. Harmanpreet Kaur’s team has two points while the Lankans are on zero. The remaining six teams will play their games in the coming days.
