Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh has really let loose on Abhishek Sharma after what can only be described as a tough T20 World Cup 2026 for the young batsman. Aside from a solid 55-run performance in the Super 8 stage and another half-century in the final against New Zealand, the explosive opener struggled significantly, putting a lot of pressure on his teammates. Yograj didn’t hold back in his criticism of Sharma, accusing him of not dedicating enough focus to cricket and relying too heavily on hitting big shots. He also cautioned him about his approach and discipline.
In an exclusive chat with InsideSport, Yograj emphasized how crucial it is for cricketers to maintain discipline to avoid failure. He pointed out that it could take a long time for Abhishek to reach the level of Yuvraj Singh, his father, and noted that many players have faltered recently because they’ve been distracted by social media, parties, and relationships.
“It would take him another age to go closer to Yuvraj Singh. The whole universe works on discipline. That’s how cricketers should work. Where are cricketers going wrong? Parties, girls, money, shooting all the time,” Yograj said.
After a rough patch that included three consecutive ducks, Abhishek’s only notable contribution was that 55-run innings against Zimbabwe in the Super 8. He wrapped up the tournament with just 141 runs over 8 matches, averaging a disappointing 17.62. Yograj didn’t shy away from expressing his frustration, stating that cricket is about more than just hitting sixes. He reminded Sharma that there are also singles, doubles, and ground shots to consider. Yograj has a point, as Abhishek’s aggressive style often backfired during the T20 World Cup.
“I’m very disgusted with him (Sharma). There are times when I drop him messages – don’t take this game for granted. He will always say ‘yes sir’. There is something called a single, a double and a boundary. Every time you cannot hit the ball in the air. You cannot keep hitting sixes and entertaining the crowd. You will fail,” Yograj revealed.
Yograj Singh reiterated the importance of focusing solely on the game and avoiding distractions from social media. He has consistently stressed the need for players to stick to a disciplined routine going to bed by 9 PM, waking up at 5 AM, training hard, and facing at least 1,000 deliveries in the nets every day.
“You fail because your mind is somewhere else. What is happening to Shubman Gill, Abhishek? The failure comes only when your mind is diverted somewhere else. That is what is happening with Abhishek. The guys walks around doing reels, that isn’t his job. He should bloody well go to bed at 9 PM and wake up at 5 AM and play a thousand balls,” Yograj added.
