Yuvraj Singh urges clarity on Rohit, Kohli's ODI future

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has called for transparency from the team management over the ODI futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, saying experienced players deserve clear communication as India begins planning for next year's ODI World Cup. His remarks come amid fresh speculation surrounding the long-term place of the senior batters in India's white-ball setup.

Reports earlier this week suggested Rohit could be playing his final international match at Lord's, claiming the selection committee was looking beyond him for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later dismissed those reports. Speaking to Star Sports, Yuvraj said the management should decide its direction early instead of leaving uncertainty around two of India's most accomplished cricketers.

Yuvraj backs balance between youth and experience

The 2011 World Cup winner stressed that successful teams require a healthy mix of experienced campaigners and emerging players. He said India should not lean entirely towards youth or veterans but should instead make its long-term plans clear to those involved. Speaking to Star Sports, Yuvraj said,

“It is up to the management who they want to stick with. Ideally, you need experience in the team. You cannot just go with young guys, or you just cannot go with only experience in the team."

Yuvraj added

“Whatever your plans are, if you want these guys to go for the World Cup, you tell them now and you secure them now. That is great, you are going to the World Cup, don’t worry about anything." 

The discussion around Rohit and Kohli's ODI futures has intensified since both players retired from Test cricket, with speculation over their international careers continuing despite repeated denials from the BCCI.

Former all-rounder wants honest communication

Yuvraj said even difficult decisions should be conveyed directly to senior players rather than leaving room for speculation. According to him, honesty from the management would ultimately be appreciated, regardless of the outcome. Yuvraj said,

“Or if you feel that someone isn’t fitting, tell them, it is going to look bad, it is going to be a hard call, but eventually the guy will appreciate that you said it on his face."

He also maintained that Rohit and Kohli have made immense contributions to Indian cricket and deserve to be treated with respect as the team charts its course towards the next ODI World Cup.
