In a very crowded e-bike market, there are multiple options for even the most persnickety rider. Some e-bikes come equipped with a range of bells and whistles—think kitchen sink effect—which can be overwhelming. On the other hand, pared-down e-bike options may leave some riders feeling cheated when expected features such as headlights or fenders are optional.

The Smalo PX2 by Besv strikes a balance for a certain type of rider.

At first glance, the PX2 is like most e-bikes, but with one glaring exception: there are no seat stays. This unique feature gives the bike a bit of a futuristic look. The second eye-catching element is the integrated headlight, which is built into the top tube instead of being mounted above the front fender like most e-bikes. Finally, the PX2's 40.5-inch wheelbase was a welcome addition to my garage as it took up less space than a road bike.

This bike has a 250W rear motor. Though not as powerful as many competitors, riders will appreciate the proprietary Smart Mode, which complements the torque sensor to easily support speeds of up to 20 mph with pedal assist.

The 365Wh battery, which charges to 80% in just over two hours, provides power for long rides. On multiple occasions, the bike easily handled 22 to 38.5-mile commutes with no power degradation. The PX2 further sets itself apart with the Smalo app. Using artificial intelligence, the app can estimate how far you can ride with the remaining battery level—a saving grace for riders like me who don't charge their battery daily.

Though not a traditional step-through, the PX2's 26.7-inch step-over height provides very good stability. I was able to place both feet on the ground seamlessly while waiting at a stop light or intersection. Whether riding for coffee or commuting to work, rolling the bike inside a store or elevator was effortless due to its compact size.

When the bike had to stay outside, my bike lock was backed up by the PX2's e-lock, a physical feature on the wheel that connects to the Smalo app. While waiting in line at a local coffee shop, the app's theft alert notified me that someone might have moved the bike. When activated in the app, the theft alarm makes an audible noise to deter would-be bike thieves.

With a range of user-friendly features, buyers won't need to purchase optional items to get rolling. The PX2 is equipped with an integrated display, built-in horn, front and rear fenders, front lights that turn on automatically when conditions demand, and rear brake lights that turn on as you slow down.

Despite all these highlights, the PX2 has some drawbacks. The compact design means there's no room for onboard storage and the upright design could leave taller riders feeling cramped.

The PX2's sleek design makes it an ideal e-bike for commuters who value a compact, easy-to-store e-bike.
