Last weekend, the new season of the Championship Darts Latin America and Caribbean Tour kicked off. At stake is the chance for darters from Latin and South America to qualify for the PDC World Darts Championship.
Last year Rashad Sweeting from the Bahamas managed to qualify for the World Championships via this route and 'The Candyman' is well on his way to sealing another visit to London. He delighted on the Ally Pally stage last year and became a cult hero.
The CDLC Tour consists of six tournaments, with at least the number one of the final ranking going to the World Darts Championship. Possibly the number two will also grab a World Cup ticket, as the field of participants in the World Darts Championship will be expanded to 128 players. It is not yet known how the extra spots will be distributed, but PDC director Matt Porter has already revealed that the bulk of these spots will go to international qualifiers.
The first tournament of the CDLC Tour was won by Jesus Salate of Argentina. He defeated Sweeting 6-4 in the semifinals and was then 6-5 too strong for Sudesh Fitzgerald in the final.
In the quarterfinals of CDLC Tour 2, Sweeting took revenge on his South American rival. The Bahamas-based darter won the second meeting between the two men 6-5. Sweeting then triumphed against Sudesh Fitzgerald (6-2) and Jonathan Heron (6-0) to win the title.
The next tournaments of the CDLC Tour will be played in the Bahamas in July. Then the circuit will conclude in Chile, where the final tournaments will be played on Oct. 4 and 5.
