Boris Krcmar outlines aspiration to return to PDC Tour despite past soft-tip success

Boris Krcmar has waved the Croatian flag on the big stage for many years now, but is seldom from the spotlight after losing his tour card at the end of last year. This does not take away the previous success he has had in the sport.

In an interview with MODUS Super Series, he has revealed his ambitions to get back onto the tour and regain his Tour Card that he lost at the end of 2024. He attempted to earn it back at European Q-School, but failed to accumulate enough points. Despite being a prolific soft-tip player, he wants to focus on steel tip, citing financial benefits.

"I had two years with a Tour Card. I played against the best players in the world," Krcmar said. "But I couldn’t keep the same level in steel tip that I had in soft-tip. Now I play more steel tip, and I hope I can reach the same level as in soft. [Financially] steel tip is better—because the prize money at the top level is higher. Now I want to focus more on steel tip. I’ll play Q-School in January, and I hope I can win a Tour Card again to play with the best players in the world."

Krcmar's rise in darts

The Croatian's rise to the top of darts was rapid. He stated that it only took two months to become the second-best player in his home nation, before he went on to win eight national titles in soft-tip.

"I started playing maybe 20 years ago," he said. "In the beginning, I went to school with my friend and we played. I saw I was good at darts and then I started playing for a team in Croatia. After two or three months, I played the Croatian Championship and finished second. That’s when I realised I was good and continued to play. After two months, I was second in Croatia. I thought, 'next year I will be champion of Croatia.' In 2009 I became world champion in soft-tip for the first time. After that, I became world champion eight times."

Before making his name in the PDC, he won 24 major titles in soft-tip, including four IDF World Championships in 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2015, making him one of the most successful soft-tip players ever. He explained how his sole focus at the start was on soft-tip, rarely playing steel-tip before his transition.

"Ninety-nine percent of the time, I played soft-tip. Before I had a Tour Card, I played two years in the PDC. But before that, I only played one or two steel tip tournaments a year. Almost all of it was soft- tip. In soft-tip, I won all the tournaments in the world. Everyone asks me this. At a professional level, there’s a big difference. Soft-tip is played on a machine—when you hit a triple 20 you hear a loud sound. Here, in steel tip, you don’t hear anything. But I’ve been improving more and more at steel tip, and I think I’ll be successful there too."

When asked if he remembered his first title, he said: "Yes. It was in 2009 in Zadar, Croatia. That was very special—winning my first world championship in my own country. I think I’ve been European champion 45 or 46 times—in different events like teams, doubles, cricket, 501. And just two months ago, I became world champion again in Slovakia."

Memorable moments at big tournaments

Krcmar has been fortunate and talented enough to feature in some of the biggest darts tournaments in the world. He has played in five PDC World Championships and four World Cups representing Croatia. His best result came in the 2024 edition, where he and Romeo Grbavac got all the way to the quarter-finals before being defeated by eventual runners-up Austria.

When asked about his experiences at these significant tournaments, he said: "A great moment. Every darts player dreams of this. I played there three or four times. It’s the best experience for me—the atmosphere, everything. But they support good darts. It doesn’t matter who throws, they enjoy it. After my matches there, I got maybe three or four hundred messages on Facebook or WhatsApp. It’s crazy.

"Always a big honour to play for my country. We played two months ago in Frankfurt—it’s always special, and a very nice memory."
