Former world number one Colin Lloyd has spoken out about the constant comparisons between darts sensation Luke Littler and the legendary Phil Taylor. According to Lloyd, it is time to judge Littler on his own performance not 'The Power's past exploits.
'The Nuke' has now secured a place in the playoffs of the Premier League Darts, which take place later this month at the iconic O2 Arena in London. With 38 points, he leads the rankings and appears to be heading toward breaking the league's points record, which currently stands at 40. Littler, who has already won five league titles this season, is seen by many as the future ruler of the darts world. Yet Lloyd, himself a former world number one, tempered comparisons with the greatest of all time.
In an interview with talkSPORT Lloyd said. "I don’t want to use the words Taylor-esque because Taylor was the same.
“Different era, different players with two completely different people. He is not Phil Taylor. He is Luke Littler. And listen, he has the ability to absolutely blow people away.
Level
According to Lloyd, there are very few players who can reach that same level. “Luke Humphries is up there as one of those I think. Gezzy Price on his day and MVG.
“There’s only a small group of players that have been capable over the years to throw sublime darts for a period of time and make it look easy.”
The 17-year-old Littler leads all statistics this year. In no fewer than 51 of his 87 matches played, he recorded an average of over 100 - fifteen times more than his nearest rival, Luke Humphries. The young Englishman is also untouchable in the number of 180s. With 435 he is proudly on top, 78 more than world champion Beau Greaves, who is in an impressive second place. In addition, Littler has won two of the last four major titles, further reinforcing his rise to the highest level.
Tonight, the teenage sensation returns to action during game day fifteen of the Premier League Darts. In an absolute cracker, he takes on his direct rival Luke Humphries in the quarter-finals - a duel that may be a preview of the final in London.
