Damon Heta triumphed yesterday at the 20th Players Championship of the year. The 37-year-old Australian defeated Stephen Bunting 8-7 in the final in Leicester.

For Heta it is his second triumph this year at the Players Championship, in mid-April he was already the best at Players Championship 13 by beating Nathan Aspinall in the final.

Heta captured his PDC Tour Card in 2020. That same year, in Niederhausen, Germany, he won the first Players Championship of his career by defeating Joe Cullen 8-4 in the final. His final victory yesterday was now already his ninth triumph at the Players Championship.

'The Heat' also won a tournament on the European Tour in 2022 (Gibraltar Darts Trophy, where he won 8-7 over Peter Wright in the final), bringing him to ten Pro Tour titles in the meantime. He is the 22nd player to manage to win at least ten tournaments on the PDC Pro Tour.

Heta already gets a chance to add an 11th title today. After all, the 21st Players Championship of the year takes place at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester this afternoon. Heta can become the first player there to manage to win two consecutive Players Championships this year.

World Matchplay

Heta has now moved up to ninth place in the world rankings. Thanks to this tournament victory, he is also one of the favorites for the upcoming World Matchplay, which starts next Saturday in Blackpool. Luke Humphries will defend his title there, after winning 18-15 over Michael van Gerwen in the final last year. Heta was stranded in the opening round last year after a 10-4 defeat to Ryan Searle. His best performance at the World Matchplay was in 2023, when he lost 16-13 to Humphries in the quarterfinals.
