Draw North American Darts Championship: All eyes on Campbell and Gates in Ally Pally pursuit

The North American Championship returns to the legendary Madison Square Garden on Saturday, June 28, where eight darters from Canada and the United States will compete for not only $10,000 in prize money, but also coveted spots at the PDC World Darts Championship and Grand Slam of Darts.

All eyes are on Matt Campbell, who is defending his title in New York. The Canadian was in the final for the second year in a row last year and is now aiming for a back-to-back victory in the Big Apple. As the highest-ranked North American on the PDC circuit - with two Players Championship finals since 2022 to his name - the 35-year-old is considered the favorite.

Campbell begins his tournament against Jason Brandon, a veteran from Tennessee. Brandon qualified through CDC qualification, defeating David Cameron in it to secure his return to the big stage. He also saw off Stephen Bunting at the US Darts Masters.

A real cracker of a tie awaits in the form of the duel between American number one Danny Lauby and Leonard Gates, winner of the CDC Cross-Border Challenge and champion of this tournament in 2022. Both men are crowd favorites with proven stage experience. Also with Gates already qualified twice for Ally Pally, many will hope Lauby does the business.

The winner of that duel will take on either Jim Long or Adam Sevada. Long, who most recently represented Canada at the World Cup of Darts, meets the leader of the CDC Order of Merit in what promises to be an extremely interesting showdown.

The encounter between Jules van Dongen and Stowe Buntz is also not to be missed. Van Dongen has had a Tour Card for several years, while Buntz impressed by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam of Darts in 2023.

According to rule 3.9 of the PDC rules, if Matt Campbell, currently in his fourth year with a PDC Tour Card, wins the North American Championship, he will not be eligible to qualify for the World Darts Championship or the Grand Slam of Darts. In that case, the available qualifying spot will be awarded to another representative of the Championship Darts Corporation. Further details will be announced at a later date.
