This year's WDF World Cup 2025 will be held in faraway South Korea. From Monday, September 22 to Saturday, September 27, the international darts world will descend on the metropolis of Seoul for the most prestigious tournament of the World Darts Federation (WDF). England Darts have announced their selections for the tournament.

The World Cup is the largest country tournament within the WDF and is organized every two years. After the previous edition in Esbjerg (Denmark) in 2023, it is now Asia's turn. Following on Sunday, September 28, the WDF gold tournament Korea Open will also take place.

As usual, England is coming to the World Cup with a strong selection. Per country, four men, four ladies, two boys and two girls will participate.

Men's team

The following players represent England in the men's team led by an established captain.

  • Scott Mitchell - the former World Champion and previous PDC Tour Card holder will anchor his country as the captain in South Korea bringing valuable experience.
  • Jarred Cole - The King of the Castle, Cole has enjoyed some success on the MODUS Super Series despite not being able to get onto the PDC Tour as of yet but he will get the honour of representing his country.
  • Sean Holley - Starring on his debut at the British Internationals, he performed so well that he was added to the England team for the Six Nations in June.
  • Chas Barstow - also a well established member of the team and previous PDC Challenge Tour standout, Barstow returns.

Women's selection

The women's team won the Six Nations and will be led by an icon of Women's darts.

  • Rebecca Rose - joins the team and led the UKDA Ladies Averages this season.
  • Laura Turner - A former World Championship Quarter-Finalist, Turner who is also familiar to those who watch PDC Darts on Sky Sports as a commentator and pundit is a usual feature of a strong England side.
  • Steph Clarke - another familiar part of the England set up is Clarke who also plays on the PDC Women's Series.
  • Deta Hedman - A winner of over 240 ranking titles and one of the greatest darts players in terms of titles won. 'The Heart of Darts' returns to lead the team.

Tournament Form

The World Cup consists of several parts:

  • Men and women: team tournament, pairs tournament and singles tournament
  • Youth: singles, couples and mixed pairs

There are medals to be earned for each section. In addition, within each category there is competition for the coveted overall title, based on points earned.

History of the World Cup

While the England team having scooped the Six Nations is a strong one, it does not feature the leading light from last time it was held in Esbjerg in 2023. Beau Greaves will not return having won the Women's Singles, Women's Pairs back then and also the Women's Overall title.

Berry van Peer was the men's champion back in 2023 while Haupai Puha and Ben Robb scooped the men's pairs. Netherlands won the Men's Team title. While a strong Ireland team won the women's event.

Prior to that in 2019, it was dominated by England in the Women's with Maria O'Brien, Lorraine Winstanley, Deta Hedman and Fallon Sherrock being the team. Only really Scott Mitchell and Hedman remain out of those who played back in Cluj. With the advent of the Women's Series, it has led to lesser teams with Greaves, Sherrock among others preferring to play PDC Darts over the World Cup.

While in the men's, it is often dominated anyway by the Netherlands who won with Berry van Peer as men's champion and Jelle Klaasen, Wesley Plaisier, Ryan de Vreede and Van Peer last time. Albeit it is also all change on that end with most now being Tour Card holders. So it will be interesting to see who wins the bi annual event with no doubt a strong Asian contingent too with it taking place in Korea.
