Later this month, the British Open Darts will be played again in the English coastal town of Bridlington. An anniversary edition, as the tournament is approaching its 50th edition. From Sept. 19 to 22, the tournament will be played at the famous Bridlington Spa, where about a thousand participants and fans from several countries are expected.
The tournament has now been held at the Spa for 21 years and is labeled by organizers as one of the longest running darts tournaments in the world. Chairman of England Darts, Tommy Thompson, emphasizes the uniqueness of the anniversary year.
"The event gives players of all abilities the opportunity to participate in a world ranking championship on this historic milestone," Thompson said.
Since the first edition in 1975, numerous darts icons have made their appearance at this tournament. Among them Eric Bristow, Bob Anderson, John Lowe, Dennis Priestley, Martin Adams, Raymond van Barneveld, Andy Fordham, Mervyn King, Gary Anderson, Michael van Gerwen and many other big names.
In 2023, a 16-year-old Luke Littler made history by winning the men's tournament just months before he became the youngest player ever to reach the final of the PDC World Championship.
The three-day darts spectacle has a broad program with categories for men, women, youth (boys and girls) and para-darters. The winners will be crowned winners of a tournament in the 'gold category' and there is also a spot at stake for the WDF World Championship at Lakeside, to be held in December 2025.
The tournament begins on Friday afternoon with the England International Men's Trial, followed by the British Open Pairs in the evening. Saturday is devoted to the British Classic (men's and women's), the British Open Youth and the World Para Darts British Open. On Sunday, the titles will be distributed in the British Open Men's and Ladies tournaments, followed by a live stream of the grand finals.
