Jonny Clayton could not be denied this weekend. He is the Dutch Darts Championship winner after seeing off rising German, Niko Springer who for the early part looked like he would ease to victory.
But Clayton has won his first European Tour title outside of Austria. Usually seen with that excellent green janker for winning the title there, he will gain some different silverware and after showing form at times this year, he has a European Tour title again.
While Springer has perhaps been the story of the weekend. The young German has been stoic throughout in beating all apart from Clayton and the crowd against Dutch opposition. His time will come no doubt but this weekend belongs to the Welshman.
Springer sprung out of the blocks with a 93 checkout to hold throw. A 180 left 81 but Springer opened the door.
Only for Clayton to miss bull for 84 and Springer hit double six for 2-0 to break. A 66 checkout continued an epic start for Springer.
Clayton got on the board at 3-1 down. Springer missed 87 to go 4-1 up but returned for double four to go half way to the finish. Clayton hit double eight to make it 4-2.
Springer pinned double 20 to make it 5-2. A 62 checkout saw Clayton break to make it 5-4 and he was throwing for parity. A 65 checkout saw Clayton make it 5-5.
Clayton hit 137 to leave double 12 with Springer needing 79 for 6-5 and the Welshman returned for double 12 to make it 6-5 and four legs in a row. He was throwing to suddenly go one away.
Clayton hit 91 to make it 7-5 and to go one away. Clayton missed 167 for the title on the bull. Springer held but Clayton was throwing for the title. Clayton missed two darts for the title but was set to return with Springer way back.
He hit double two to seal the title in an 8-6 win. Utterly fantastic from The Ferret.
