'I am pretty certain of it' - Matthew Edgar thinks Steve Beaton is planning a comeback for specific reason

Steve Beaton put an end to his impressive career on the PDC Pro Tour at the end of 2024, but according to former professional player and analyst Matt Edgar, the Beaton chapter is not closed for good. Edgar even tips the 1996 BDO world champion for a surprising comeback.

Although Beaton, now 61 years old, voluntarily surrendered his PDC Tour Card last year and appeared to retire from the top level, Edgar still sees plenty of potential in a return. In the Love the Darts podcast, in which he joined presenters Emma Paton and Abigail Davies, Edgar left no doubt: Beaton might just show up at Q-School in January.

Currently, 'The Bronzed Adonis' is still active on the senior tour and within the MODUS Super Series, but Edgar believes the lure of the increasingly lucrative PDC circuit will be hard to resist.

"With the increased ranking money next year, if you're going to have a bad year and miss the big events, you can get away with it this year because you can make it back up again in the previous year and the following year when you're not defending anything, you've got this heightened prize money, you can make the jump quite significantly," Edgar said.

"Those sorts of players that are looking that they be missing out on some of the big events or they could be going down the rankings like Michael Smith and Dimitri Van den Bergh, this is the year to have a slip because you can get away with it this year to the point where it's not going to ruin you for the four-five year plan.

"How many people out there has this really inspired and encouraged because it's two big announcements. We've given you access and opportunity not just in the World Championships but the World Masters now.

Revised structure

According to Edgar, the PDC's revamped structure opens the door for experienced players who want to have one more crack at it: "You're guaranteed the UK Open so realistically you think, 'Well, if I just have an okay season I should be in three potentially big events. That's great for your sponsorships and the prize money going up, this is right now a very good position for any darts player."

Abigail Davies expressed hope that Beaton would show up again at the highest level, to which Edgar responded sharply. "I think he does, "I'm calling it now. I think Steve Beaton's at Q School this year. I am pretty certain of it."

Expectations

Q-School, the annual qualifying tournament for players without a Tour Card, is the gateway to the professional PDC circuit. Yet Beaton himself recently tempered expectations. In an interview with Online Darts, he said he was at peace with his farewell.

"You've got to move on. I'm 61 now," he shared with Online Darts. "I can't keep playing darts all the time. I do watch them and I feel for them you know, they're on the clock all the time. It's great when you're younger. But once you get older it's harder."

Still, the fire is not yet extinguished. Whether we will actually see Beaton back at Q-School remains guesswork for now. But one thing is certain: in the world of darts, nothing is impossible. Certainly not for a living legend with 33 World Championship appearances to his name.
