Amsterdam will host a mouth-watering clash on Friday evening as the World Series of Darts Finals get under way. World No.1 Luke Humphries, fresh from winning the US Darts Masters in June, takes on none other than James Wade – the 2018 champion of this very event.
The draw has paired two of the game’s heavyweights right from the start, and fireworks are guaranteed. Only a week ago, Humphries and Wade faced each other in the semi-finals of the Czech Darts Open, where “Cool Hand Luke” dismantled his compatriot with a commanding 7–1 victory before going on to lift the trophy in Prague.
Yet there is no reason to underestimate Wade. The experienced left-hander has been proving for months that he remains among the elite. On the European Tour he reached three consecutive semi-finals, and in 2025 alone he has twice made it all the way to the final of a major – at both the UK Open and the prestigious World Matchplay. The big title has eluded him so far this year, but his consistency radiates threat.
For Humphries, meanwhile, the months following his stunning Premier League triumph were a battle to find rhythm again.
“Since I’ve won the Premier League it’s been tough for me. I have been struggling, but it felt so good to win in Prague,” claimed Humphries. “Now I feel dangerous again. This is when you need to be at your best, at the back end of the year. I know if I want to stay as world number one I have to put the effort in and work hard. I want to be World Champion again, so it all starts from now.”
That renewed sense of danger comes at just the right time. The closing months of the year traditionally set the tone for the new season, with big titles, world ranking positions and, above all, confidence heading into the World Championship all on the line.
The opening night of the World Series Finals promises to be a thriller. Humphries versus Wade is not only a meeting of two English stars, but also a clash between the current world No.1 and one of the circuit’s most seasoned, reliable performers. Humphries takes to the stage with renewed belief, while Wade arrives in the form of his life, though still searching for that elusive 2025 title.
Whether Humphries can extend his winning streak or Wade once again proves his reputation as a tournament battler will be revealed on Friday night. One thing is certain: Amsterdam has a blockbuster on its hands.
