Big news in the darts world: George Noble announced live on Viaplay on Sunday evening that he will retire as a PDC referee at the end of this season. The distinctive Englishman — known affectionately as “The Puppy” — will step away after more than three decades as one of the sport’s most recognisable voices on the oche.
He has already made his European Tour farewell at the Dutch Darts Championship, but his final appearance will come on the sport’s biggest stage: the 2026 World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace will mark the end of his officiating career.
Noble began refereeing in the 1990s with the British Darts Organisation (BDO), quickly gaining recognition on the iconic Lakeside stage. His switch to the PDC signalled the start of a long and successful tenure, where he became a mainstay at major televised tournaments, admired for his calm delivery and razor-sharp precision.
Following Russ Bray’s departure, Noble’s exit is another significant loss for the PDC refereeing team. Kirk Bevins, Huw Ware, and Charlie Corstorphine remain — all experienced, though relatively young. It’s widely expected the PDC will soon appoint a fourth official. Candidates like Franz Engerer and Lucas Mirbach have already impressed on the European Tour and appear ready to make the step up.
Noble also weighed in on the future of refereeing: “I think it’s time we had the first female referee at a major tournament — and maybe even the first non-British one too,” he said.
Although Noble is stepping back from the top level, he’s unlikely to leave darts behind entirely. Earlier this year, he showed his continued love for the game by taking part in the pairs competition at the Dutch Open — as a player.
George Noble’s farewell marks the end of an era. For decades, he set the rhythm of matches, energised crowds with his trademark calls, and served the sport with distinction. The darts world is losing an icon — but gaining a legend for life.
He told Dutch TV that he thinks 'it's time for the first non-British referee and the first female referee'.
