Danny van Trijp was firmly in the spotlight last week—but not solely for his performances at the oche. The Dutchman, currently without a tour card, made headlines during the Modus Super Series thanks to two unexpected and memorable moments: a dramatic fall from the stage and an unusually loud celebration after hitting a 180.
Naturally, these incidents became prime talking points in the latest episode of Darts Draait Door, the Sportnieuws.nl podcast. Host Damian Vlottes opened the segment with a playful jab: “Maybe he needs a course in walking?” That drew laughter from co-host and former professional player Vincent van der Voort, who recalled the moment with a grin. “That was funny, yeah,” he chuckled. Thankfully for Van Trijp, the week ended on a high. Teaming up with partner Jimmy van Schie, he went on to win the tournament—ensuring the mishap didn’t overshadow their success.
Van der Voort was clearly entertained by Van Trijp’s chaotic week. “It really was his week, wasn’t it? Fair play to him. They deserved it,” he said. But he also struck a more serious note, questioning Van Trijp’s long-term approach to the sport. “If he were a bit more focused and had a clear plan, he could absolutely earn himself a tour card.”
According to Van der Voort, Van Trijp’s scattergun approach may be holding him back. “He’s playing in everything. At some point, you need to start making choices. It’s just too much right now—there’s no structured plan for progress.”
The root of the problem, Van der Voort believes, is a lack of direction. While ambition is important, it needs to be paired with strategy. “Eventually, it just becomes overwhelming,” he warned.
The podcast also touched on Van Trijp’s exuberant 180 celebration, which raised more than a few eyebrows. “What was that all about?” Van der Voort remarked. “I’ve shouted after a 180 before too, but not like that.”
