Luke Littler & Luke Humphries skip Players Championship triple header after World Cup disappointment
Jenny Segers/PDC Europe

After a tough defeat in their opening match of the 2025 World Cup of Darts, it seems both Luke Littler and Luke Humphries need a bit of time to recover. Neither of the English team have registered their availability for the upcoming triple header of Players Championship events.

Littler and Humphries had been widely touted as the standout favourites for the 2025 World Cup of Darts but things just didn't click once they got up on stage, with the pairing of the world champion and world number one roundly beaten by an inspired German pairing of Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko.

Elsewhere, Michael van Gerwen will not compete this week in the three Players Championship tournaments being played in Leicester from Tuesday, June 17 to Thursday, June 19. Van Gerwen played his last match on May 22 during the final round of Premier League Darts play. Two days later, it was announced that his marriage to Daphne Govers had broken down. It later became clear that Van Gerwen would not play tournaments again until the divorce is properly settled.

Besides the three leaders in the PDC Order of Merit, there are a few more top players absent from the Players Championship triptych. Rob Cross, Michele Turetta, Jules van Dongen, and Tim Wolters are all withdrawing.

Their spots will be filled by the highest-ranked players on the Challenge Tour Order of Merit. This will allow Darius Labanauskas, Stefan Bellmont, Ted Evetts, Mervyn King, Jack Tweddell, Carl Sneyd and Danny van Trijp to make their fill-in on the Pro Tour.

Notably, Dimitri van den Bergh has signed up for the Players Championship tournaments. The Belgian made his return to the World Cup of Darts last weekend after taking a darts break in April. A good number of top players are also competing. The list of participants includes Gary Anderson, Nathan Aspinall, Stephen Bunting, Dave Chisnall, Jonny Clayton, Gerwyn Price, James Wade and Peter Wright, as well as fresh World Cup winners Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney.

A total of 125,000 pounds in prize money is distributed at each Players Championship tournament. The winner of the event receives the top prize of 15,000 pounds.
